This paper sketches the outlines of a cultural identity of the ass in Greek and Roman literatures. In detail, from an anthropological perspective, it point out the characteristics of the bray. It is the most violent and unpleasant cry of ancient sound sphere, the antithesis of the harmony and moreover it is able to terrify. This capability to scare is a paradoxical trait since the ass have a legendary meek disposition. In contrast with his foolish nature, the ass can also utter a warning cry, which is like a supernatural message for the man. In conclusion, the analysis of the classical and biblical sources highlight a many – sided identity.
