The main goal of this paper is to analyze the propaganda and persuasion techniques used by four Spanish correspondents during World War I to characterize Italy and Italians, and the meaning of these images in the Spanish context. Through the framing of events and their inclusion in well-known narrative schemes, journalists tried to give Italy a meaning, coherent with their ideological goals. Three issues will be studied: the city as a metonymic representation of people and country, the narrations in which Italy takes part as a character, and the interpretation of the links that the Italian army creates with the territory it occupies. Thus, from an aliadófilo point of view, Italy is the cradle of civilization and the most important fighter in an everlasting struggle against German barbarism. On the other hand, for the germanófilo, Italy is only an opportunist always ready to betray its allies in order to plunder them.
