Only a few years after its completion, the MAXXI is suffering from severe ageing phenomena. In view of the establishment of care and maintenance actions, an extensive knowledge process, founded on the methodological and operative apparatus of the conservation discipline, was undertaken. Focusing on this experience, the paper aims to highlight the theoretical and technical difficulties arousing from the treatment of contemporary architecture.
