In this article is investigated the role of Spatial Planning in The Netherlands and is hyphotized a comparison between Zuid Holland and Calabria, in the south of Italy.. The focus is to show as spatial planning could influence urban policies and development. The text explains the different urban approaches developed in the Netherland since 1960 underlining the strategic meaning of policies and urban design developed in Amsterdam and Rotterdam but also the different skills on coastal development managed by National Governament, Provinces and Local Municipalities. Are shown two important projects, Zuidas and Kop van Zuid, that explain the implementation of urban policies on land development. In the last part, in conclusion, is done a comparison between dutch and italian context to promote a discussion on comparison and on reproducibility of the success of urban policies in territories characterized by different cultures and by a very deep difference in social, geomorphological, geographic, economical and urban approach.
