Abstract

The use of the lightened embankment is, nowadays, turning out to be a solution widely adopted for the fast rebuilding of roads or where the bearing capacity of the foundation soil does not allow the construction of embankment using the classic methods. The stress-strain response when the asphalt layers are confined below by a high insulation material, e.g. a lightened embankment with EPS, has been the subject of a research conducted in order to encourage the broadest dissemination of this intervention solution. Indeed, this operative condition does not allow the asphalt layers to dissipate heat through the embankment, thus determining significantly higher operating temperatures than in case of ordinary embankment. This is crucial where the local weather conditions are thermally unsuitable (e.g. South-Europe / Sub-equator areas). A series of bituminous conglomerate specimens modified with different percentages of polymer and inorganic filler has been prepared, in order to modify its rheological and mechanical properties and to achieve a solution that keeps the highest number of the following characteristics: selective thermal conductivity; high resistance to indirect pull; high performance in relation to the level of traffic and to the operating temperature.
