Speaking of the built environment, we almost talk about the light that characterizes it and almost never about the absence of light; yet it is this absence of light that defines the contours of architecture and gives us back the plasticity and the spatial three-dimensionality. The shadow is an absence, a fading of light; it is difficult to speak of this subtraction of illumination, precisely because it represents the negation of a positive phenomenon. The shadow space is a border space, a threshold that defines the boundary between a clear and diaphanous space and a less clear space, but no less interesting. Indeed, the gradient between light and shadow can be an interesting tool for interpreting the use of space.
