The archaeological research within the FIRB Project has been carried out in different sites. According to the global approach, besides the surveys aimed historical and topographical classification, also 3D surveys of the examined sacred places were provided: this proved to be meaningful not only for the scholarly analysis and research, but also for the cultural development and exploitation of the investigated area. Important case studies have been, among others, Rometta and the area of Enna (Sicily), and St. Michael’s rock sanctuary at Mount Tancia (Lazio). Most significant, however, has been the archaeological investigation carried out on an early medieval church with a single apse and a single aisle, the so called “St. Nicholaus’ hermitage” (Gargano, Apulia) and the related 3D survey: this set interesting issues on the function of the site – which is clearly connected with the sanctuary of St. Matthew – between 9th and 14th centuries
