Abstract

The paper illustrates the manifested degradation in a nineteenth-century rural building recently recovered. The construction, being part of the Orleans’ ex-agricultural park in Palermo, has been for a long time in ruin and illegally busy. In 1994 the Athenaeum in Palermo programs the recovery of the building to destine to kindergarten for the consumers of the Faculties. The works, started in 2002 and concluded in 2003, have concerned the reconstruction of the annex in ruin and the recovery of the existing building approaching the use of materials and techniques of the local constructive tradition to new necessary functional and structural solutions for the new destination. Through the iter that goes from the documentation of the existing state, to the project and the execution of the works, it will be focused on a degradation of the external surface due to manifested damp after around a year from the completion of the works. Since the first demonstrations, the phenomenon has been monitored and studied, besides schematic reliefs and a constant photographic campaign through destructive tests and not (core borings, electric tomography, thermography and measures of the superficial damp with hydrometer). The physical and chemical analyses will be described with the purpose to determine the possible causes. The paper concludes with the last phase regarding the direct inspection, the adoption of fit solutions of vertical obstruction, the removal of plasters and the use of fit products furnished by the market. The essay moreover will formulate some hypotheses of investigations finalized to the prevention of the damages and the pathologies that had to appear after the completion of the works, whose reparation is extremely expensive.
