This article focuses on the ancient knowledge related to the mineral classification. Precisely, this research examines the status of the coral and the lynx's stone, highlighting the cultural models that determine the principles of their denomination and categorization. The stones above-mentioned have a complex identity because of their "mutant" nature. Those stones pass from the botanical and animal world to that of minerals: the close examination of this surprising metamorphic itinerary involves the study of many fields of ancient knowledge, from science to myth, from medicine to magic. This stones have a cultural identity that permits us to understand some frames of mind of the ancient, concerning the opposition between the animate and inanimate world, the boundary between the real and the imaginary, so as between the life and the death.
