The inscriptions on cippi are widely spread in ancient Italy. However, inside this category it is possible to identify a small group of cippi that share similar characteristics, such as the height (between 120 and 150 cm) and the (sometimes irregular) bustrophedic ductus. These inscriptions, attested in various geographic (and linguistic) areas and dating back approximately to the VI century BC, prefigure mainly as public documents of institutional pertinence. It seems extremely interesting, then, to investigate the connection between the institutional aspect of the document and the bustrophedic ductus; this could actually be an indication of writing as a true and faithful copy of the original which, probably, was written on perishable material lost to us.
