The archaeological investigations conducted in the area between the roof and the ceiling of the northern arm of the transept of the Upper Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi, following the earthquake of 1997, led to the discovery of a fragment of paper, which would appear to be part of a construction site ledger. This paper analyzes the document as both a historical and archaeological source. In the archaeological stratigraphy, the fragment dates to a broad period ranging from the second half of the 15th century to before the interventions of the late 19th century, and to a layer pertaining to the renovation of the rainwater drainage system, probably carried out in the late 15th century. The latter date is also suggested by the palaeographic examination, thewatermark and the form and content of the document. Here it is posited that it may have beenwritten by more than one hand, in a cultural environment connected with skilled workers from central Italy and with various generations of Comacine masters, who at the beginning of the 15th century were already active in the Saint Francis of Assisi complex and in Umbria.

Abstract
Here it is posited that it may have beenwritten by more than one hand, in a cultural environment connected with skilled workers from central Italy and with various generations of Comacine masters, who at the beginning of the 15th century were already active in the Saint Francis of Assisi complex and in Umbria.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
