La decorazione della frons scaenae del teatro di Leptis Magna: problemi di determinazione della spesa

The frons scaenae in the Roman theatre at Leptis Magna was rebuilt in the age of the Antonines, with an important building inscription that can be used to show, together with archaeological evidence, the amount of the expenditure (HS 500.000) for marble used in its new aspect, despite its incomplete state of conservation that makes it open to many interpretations.In this paper we are going to put forward a building cost estimate for the pavonazzetto marble column used in this building, in order to clarify some aspects of the important expenditure. It will be used a method based both on the estimate of the work implied in the manufacturing of columns, and the value of the material itself, as like as its transport from quarries in Phrygia to the construction yard at Leptis.

La frons scaenae del teatro di Leptis Magna, ricostruita in età antonina, ha restituito una notevole iscrizione edilizia in grado di documentare, assieme all’evidenza archeologica, l’ammontare del finanziamento per la sua decorazione rinnovata, a 500.000 sesterzi; tuttavia lo stato incompleto di conservazione la rende suscettibile di varie interpretazioni. In questa sede si intende proporre una ricostruzione della spesa, soprattutto per le colonne in marmo pavonazzetto, che potrebbe chiarire e definire meglio alcuni aspetti della notevole spesa necessaria. Si userà un metodo basato sul calcolo del lavoro necessario alla fabbricazione e sul valore del materiale, oltre che al trasporto delle colonne dalle cave al cantiere.
