The manuscript presents the results of the analysis conducted by the Sicilian research unit, composed of scholars from the Universities of Catania, Messina and Enna, concerning the spread of Covid-19 virus in Sicily, during the pandemic initial phase. Making use of the statis- tical analysis and cartographic representations of official data, the study shows how insularity has functioned as a defensive boundary against the spread of the Covid-19 infection. Focusing on territorial dynamism and mobility, the analysis emphasises a number of specific local condi- tions, in terms of both weaknesses and resilience. The cartographic representation of collected data has been used with the aim to show how the interlinkages between social, economic and infrastructural aspects have influenced the territorial spread of the virus, as well as its uneven distribution and impact on urban and inner areas, resulted more from relational rather than demographic dimensions.
