Monolithic column shafts, at the beginnings of Greek temple architecture, still defy the efforts of scholars, both for large dimensions and difficulty of carving and placement. The largest examples are in Sicily, in two temples at Syracuse, but also at Selinus (temple Y and temple C), with considerable problems of design, technical feasibility and calculation of the workforce necessary to quarry, transport and set up similar enormous monoliths. In this contribution we intend to collect the hitherto known cases of columns with monolithic shafts, with the data available for chronology, and propose a quantification of the economic commitment necessary, in terms of financing and time used, to complete these large architectural feats of archaic age. In addition, a comparison of analogous cases of the motherland, such as the temple of Apollo in Corinth, is proposed.

Abstract
In addition, a comparison of analogous cases of the motherland, such as the temple of Apollo in Corinth, is proposed.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
