In the paper a procedure for the prediction of the response of masonry walls under lateral forces orthogonal to the middle plane in the case of one dimensional behaviour, based on the hypothesis of plane cross-section and a nonlinear stress-strain equivalent law for the material is presented. The proposed procedure is supported by an experimental investigation involving calcarenite masonry walls. The characteristics of the above procedure are discussed and the strategy to improve the obtainable analytical results is suggested for the analysis of the types of walls investigated.
