The First World War brought about a radical transformation not only of the European geopolitical order, but also of the ways in which human experience was represented in Western culture. In this context, the war chronicle emerged as a privileged genre for articulating information, direct testimony, and literary elaboration. This study analyzes Campos de batalla y campos de ruinas by Enrique Gómez Carrillo, with the aim of examining how the work constructs a representation of modern warfare based on lived experience in French territory. The analysis draws on methodological tools from literary criticism, cultural studies, and testimony theory, and focuses on the depiction of the horrors of trench warfare — marked by the dehumanization of combat — as well as on the propagandistic dimension of the text. From this perspective, the article proposes a reflection on testimonial writing as a form of humanistic knowledge, linked to memory, subjectivity, and the representation of reality.
