Videogames have become an integral part of contemporary life, enriching traditional forms of socialization and play rather than displacing them. Yet, for a minority of individuals, gaming disrupts relationships, educational or work commitments, and overall well-being. This chapter critically explores whether problematic gaming among young people emerges as a maladaptive coping mechanism for underlying distress or constitutes an independent source of dysfunction. We delve into the societal and psychological roles of gaming, drawing a critical distinction between healthy passion and problematic engagement. Special focus is given to the psychological functions gaming serves, the influence of psychological vulnerabilities, and the specific circumstances that may predispose individuals to gaming-related problems. The chapter concludes by addressing common responses from caregivers and others close to affected individuals, advocating for empathetic and informed approaches, and encouraging acknowledgment of the severity while avoiding making it worse. Finally, we propose a framework for understanding problematic gaming and practical strategies to support young people overinvolved with videogames and their families, fostering healthier and more balanced interactions with virtual environments.
