Face-to-face communication plays a fundamental role in any human interaction. Interactions between people working in the migrant reception system and migrants themselves are not exceptions to this type of communication because effective face-to-face communication with migrants is a prerequisite for safeguarding their stay in the host country. However, managing interpersonal interactions in this field merits special attention since hosts and migrants often belong to different cultures. This management, therefore, requires that people providing services to migrants possess appropriate knowledge and intercultural communication skills. Intercultural communication can serve as a tool which law enforcement officers, medical and paramedical staff as well as social workers may use in different ways to meet with migrants and to develop interactions which respect the various cultures they will encounter. Departing from this premise, the aim of this paper is to explore how the adoption of an intercultural approach to the management of non-verbal communication (NVC) codes can facilitate the reception of migrants.
