This paper presents the results of an experimental campaign intended to measure the vibrations of the silver statue of the Immaculate Conception (1647), kept in the church of San Francesco d'Assisi in Palermo. The accelerations of several target points on the statue have been recorded during the annual procession on December the 8th 2009 and during a series of “ad hoc” tests conducted inside the church. Although, this study is concerned with knowing the real entity of vibrations induced during the transportation in procession, indeed it stresses the fundamental role of dynamic tests for structural characterization. In fact, the analysis of recorded acceleration has stressed not only, that the strongest vibrations, are due to the lack of synchronism among the carriers, but also a failure of restraints in transversal direction, between the statue and its wood support.
