In the field of treatment for pathological gambling (PG) only ambulatory psychotherapy or counseling is generally offered. Long term therapeutic communities and psychiatric institutions usually do not offer adequate therapeutic opportunity, especially for clients who need to keep the contact with their work, family and social milieau. From these consideration a three weeks intensive residential treatment called ORTHOS, sponsored by the Regione Toscana, has been developed under the initiative of Riccardo Zerbetto, psychiatrist and psychotherapist. Twenty treatment programs has been completed during 5 years in a residential facility close to Siena. Research on outcomes was conducted on 140 cases who completed the ORTHOS treatment. In T0, participants were assessed on PG symptoms via the South Oaks Gambling Screen through (SOGS, Lesieur and Blume, 1987); also the psychic global functioning was assessed through the Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF, APA, 2000). Participants were reassessed with the same measures at least one year after they completed the ORTHOS treatment (T1). The results of this study showed a significant reduction of PG symptoms (effect size = .90) and a general improvement of global functioning (effect size = 0.89) in T1. Therefore, the ORTHOS treatment program resulted effective for patients suffering from PG symptoms.
