Gypsies occupy the geographical and symbolic periphery of our society and are described as sexist and pre-modern deniers of women’s rights. However, the ethnographic analysis of the complex, gender structure among the Roma, shows that it is the result of an active, family and social teaching, a complex non-formal and informal education. And this education is strongly infl uenced by the social confl ict between Roma and gagé. Then, the possibility of transforming gender dynamics between Roma are entrusted to their self-organization, to a contemporary overcoming the economic and cultural oppression that our society imposes on many Roma and, last but not least, to an analysis of Roma specifi c educational needs, which is yet to be conducted.

Abstract
Gypsies occupy the geographical and symbolic periphery of our society and are described as sexist and pre-modern deniers of women’s rights. However, the ethnographic analysis of the complex, gender structure among the Roma, shows that it is the result of an active, family and social teaching, a complex non-formal and informal education. And this education is strongly infl uenced by the social confl ict between Roma and gagé. Then, the possibility of transforming gender dynamics between Roma are entrusted to their self-organization, to a contemporary overcoming the economic and cultural oppression that our society imposes on many Roma and, last but not least, to an analysis of Roma specifi c educational needs, which is yet to be conducted.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
