Abstract

Nowadays, even contemporary concrete building architecture calls for interdisciplinary reflections and actions aimed at conservation. These recent buildings, victims of a technological innovation still not fully controlled and fragile, often represent important testimonies to human evolution. Although with all the limitations and contradictions stemming from a different approach to their design, compared to that of old constructions, it seems advantageous to transfer the assumptions of the restoration discipline, already discussed and elaborated for the historical heritage, also to these buildings in order to favour their permanence and preserve their identity. Focusing on the experience carried out at MAXXI museum in Rome, this paper aims to highlight the inevitable theoretical and technical difficulties that the treatment of these building arouses by its own nature. It intends to focus on the methodological path followed for the design of the complex ‘care and maintenance’ intervention, which this kind of buildings will soon undertake.
