Abstract

The limit is described as a place of social exclusion and of degradation, as a boundary of separation, and it still is considered as a physical sign that splits marginal places, where part of the population lives on the edge of civil society. The concept of spatial boundary is different depending from the project's time; the urban boundary line follows the various historical periods and constantly changes, conforming not only to the needs of the city but also to the social, economic, time and space transformations. The city changes over the time and in space, its shape and its boundaries, adapts to the needs of its community, defends itself, expands itself, merges with the surrounding territory, transforming its boundaries reinterpreting them; architecture, urban planning, history and time are characterized by a constant and bi-univocal relationship; time and space are primary elements of architectural and urban planning. The contemporary city is characterized by many territorial imbalances; the meaning of limit, of boundary, is profoundly altered both in its spatial as in its social conception.
