Abstract
Freire was a master of dialogue and healing through education. His legacy is an emancipatory form of education, which regards non-violent interaction as an effective strategy to achieve true liberation. Dialogue requires an ability to listen and a mastery of words. The struggle against analphabetism was at the heart of Freire’s pedagogy, a necessary step to restore the voice of the oppressed, whom power has condemned to silence. Culture come from the people, who, thanks to education, develop awareness and liberate all of humanity. Society and history are no longer predetermined; they are a product of free human action. Pedagogy is emancipatory knowledge, and the relationship between the teacher and the pupil takes the form of a mutual exchange: one learns while teaching, and teaches while learning. Freire’s recipe for education is commitment to build a better society. The aim of his critique of neoliberalism and capitalism is to promote awareness, liberation, and a democracy founded on solidarity. Freire’s pedagogic paradigm is a hermeneutically open perspective harmonizing theory and educational practice, life and school. This perspective translates to a practice of education based on epistemological criteria aimed at research, interpretation, investigation, and emancipatory autonomy. Only a militant and resistant pedagogy can provide a path to awareness. In Freire’s pedagogical conception, acknowledgement of otherness, and particularly recognition of those at the bottom of the social ladder and of all differences, is the epistemic key to going beyond, in the name of an ontology striving for being more. The objective is to harmonize and integrate differences, not to neutralize them, but to promote a solidary pedagogy. Such a pedagogy should be capable of achieving unity in diversity by protecting the singularity of each citizen, and of favoring reciprocal recognition and effective protection of minorities and the weak.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
