The book was promoted by UNESCO to support the activities of the Decade for Education for Sustainable Development. In December 2002, the General Assembly of the United Nations proclaimed the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESS) for the period 2005-2014 and entrusted its leadership to UNESCO. The aim of the decade is to sensitize governments and civil societies around the world to the need for a more equitable and harmonious future, respectful of one's neighbor and the planet's resources, enhancing the role that education plays in this process. The goal is to enable each individual, through education, to make a contribution to sustainable development. The main themes are presented to understand the environmental problems that threaten the planet and an essential definition of sustainable development and education in sustainability is proposed to be taken as a culture aimed at building change in society, in its relationship with the environment, use of planetary resources, world hunger, cultural diversity, human rights, peace and solidarity, and in the conception of the economy. The goal is to increase the culture of sustainability.
Il libro è stato promossa dall'UNESCO per sostenere le attività del Decennio per l'Educazione allo Sviluppo Sostenibile. Nel dicembre del 2002, l’Assemblea Generale delle Nazioni Unite ha proclamato il Decennio dell’Educazione allo Sviluppo Sostenibile (DESS) per il periodo 2005-2014 e ne ha affidato la guida all’UNESCO. Finalità del Decennio è sensibilizzare governi e società civili di tutto il mondo verso la necessità di un futuro più equo e armonioso, rispettoso del prossimo e delle risorse del Pianeta, valorizzando il ruolo che in tale percorso è rivestito dall’educazione. L’obiettivo è mettere in grado ogni individuo, mediante l’educazione, di fornire un contributo allo sviluppo sostenibile. Vengono rappresentate le tematiche principali per comprendere i problemi ambientali che minacciano il Pianeta e viene proposta una definizione essenziale di sviluppo sostenibile e di educazione alla sostenibilità da assumere come cultura mirata a costruire il cambiamento nella società, nel suo rapporto con l’ambiente, l’uso delle risorse planetarie, la fame nel mondo, le diversità culturali, i diritti umani, la pace e la solidarietà, e nella concezione dell’economia. L'obiettivo è quello di accrescere la cultura della sostenibilità.
