Abstract

In 1897, Pérez Galdós in his opening speech to the Royal Academy of Language, entitled “Spanish society as a Novelable Matter” mentioned the elements that make the novel an image of life and among them he pointed out that language was one of the most representative. All languages are represented in his novels and in his theatre, from the standard language, the political one, the legal one, the scientific one, the Abstracts ISSN 1540 5877 eHumanista/IVITRA 19 (2021): i-xxv xvi oratory to the familiar language with its turns and idioms. Galdós used several procedures to reproduce the familiar speech of the people living in Madrid, fruit of his intuition rather than study of stylistic techniques. One of these procedures is the use of phraseological units, an aspect that this article aims to analyse. In particular, some locutios and popular proverbs with somatisms cited in Fortunata and Jacinta (1887) will be analyzed in order to classify them according to their structure and function.
