This paper mainly aims to provide new theoretical and methodological insights in the study of simile, extended simile, and allegory with the support of Relevance theory. Lastly, this framework is applied to the analysis of extended simile in Luis Goytisolo’s Antagonía. We consider that the widespread presence of this rhetorical figure reflects one of the most important features of the novel: writing is always an unsuccessful attempt to give a meaning to the chaotic world where characters live.
