Literature underlines the relationship between alexithymia and the process of identity development during adolescence, demonstrating that individuals who recognize and express their emotions are successful in creating a coherent sense of identity. The present research investigates the relationship between identity development and the possible presence of alexithymia in a group of 103 adolescents, among which 48 boys (46.6%) and 55 girls (53.4%), aged between 16 and 20 (M=17.33, S.D =.80). All participants completed a constructed ad hoc anamnestic questionnaire, the Parental Bonding Instrument and the Toronto Alexithymia Scale–20. Data underlines the predictive role of difficulties in describing feelings on the identity development process. The scope of identity functions allows individuals to consciously focus their emotions, thoughts and behaviors on the target and gives them a sense of orientation.
