Known at international level for the Recovery Plan of the Upper town of Bergamo, the figure of Luigi Angelini deserves further investigation aimed at deepening its methodological and operational approach to the architectural conservation. Developed in the first half of the 20th century, a period of foremost importance for the evolution of the doctrine, his contribution seems not to have found, to date, due recognition. Although he never formulated a true theory, his reflection on both the tasks of the restorer and the purpose of the restoration project emerges from the over sixty practical interventions conducted during his lengthy career. These projects were all characterized by historical-critical rigor, respect for pre-existing buildings in their anthropic and natural context and, finally, courageous humility; a tangible legacy, on which this essay focuses to highlight its relevance in the field.
