The paper analyzes the shaping of Citizenship Education in Europe combining transcultural and comparative approaches. It develops a new theoretical approach focusing on diverse sources : international political and scientific debates, national and international legislation, changes in school curricula, as well as the role of contemporary history. In the first section the paper analyzes Italy and West Germany within the Cold War partition. The debates on a renewed citizenship education showed striking similarities. In the second part, it placed at the center of interest the changes within the field after the 1970s, focusing, within European cooperation, on how it became codified through scientific international research. The education of new generations was at the center of the political agenda. In its conclusions it focuses on the first decade after 1993 when, in different national contexts, the discipline had the ambitious aim of forming more aware citizens in a multicultural Europe.
Il saggio, frutto della discussione transdisciplinare del Seminario polesano di storia sociale, analizza la formazione dell'educazione alla cittadinanza in Europa combinando approcci transculturali e comparativi. Sviluppa un nuovo approccio teorico, concentrandosi su diverse fonti: dibattiti politici e scientifici internazionali, legislazione nazionale e internazionale, cambiamenti nei curricula scolastici, nonché sul ruolo della storia contemporanea. Nella prima sezione, l’articolo analizza l'Italia e la Germania Ovest all'interno della divisione della Guerra Fredda. Nella seconda parte, pone al centro dell'interesse i cambiamenti nel campo dopo gli anni '70, concentrandosi sulla cooperazione europea. Nelle conclusioni il saggio si concentra sul primo decennio dopo il 1993, quando, in diversi contesti nazionali, la disciplina ebbe l'ambizioso obiettivo di formare cittadini più consapevoli in un'Europa multiculturale.
