The paper traces the events linked to the restoration project of the dome of the chapel of the Crucifix, also known as the Roano chapel, between 1769 and 1771. The two design proposals for the decoration of the dome by the priest-architect Antonio Romano are investigated in relation to the context of the architectural activity promoted by the archbishop Francesco Testa. The final choice of creating a mosaic painting with a golden background in 1771 is studied considering the precocity of a possible “revival” of architectural and artistic themes of medieval Sicily.

Abstract
The paper traces the events linked to the restoration project of the dome of the chapel of the Crucifix, also known as the Roano chapel, between 1769 and 1771. The two design proposals for the decoration of the dome by the priest-architect Antonio Romano are investigated in relation to the context of the architectural activity promoted by the archbishop Francesco Testa. The final choice of creating a mosaic painting with a golden background in 1771 is studied considering the precocity of a possible “revival” of architectural and artistic themes of medieval Sicily.File in questo prodotto:
