Federico De Roberto: la guerra in controluce, tra Storia e Antistoria

This article examines the First World War’s representation in the writings of Federico De Roberto. The author, after Italy's entry into the war, participated in propaganda activities in support of the home front with a series of articles published in various newspapers, then collected in two volumes. With arguments that were based on a positivist philosophy of history he supported Italy's participation alongside states that embodied progress. After the end of the war in a series of short tales, however, De Roberto abandoned the previous certainties, representing the tragic events of the soldiers who participated. In this way, overcoming the schematisms imposed by positivist ideology, he discovers the lives of real men who were involved in the war events.

L’articolo ha come oggetto la rappresentazione del primo conflitto mondiale negli scritti di Federico De Roberto. L’autore, dopo l’entrata in guerra dell’Italia, partecipa alle attività di propaganda a sostegno del fronte interno con una serie di articoli pubblicati su vari quotidiani, successivamente raccolti in volume. Egli sostiene, con argomentazioni che si fondano su una filosofia della storia di matrice positivista, la necessità della partecipazione dell’Italia a fianco degli stati che incarnano il progresso. Conclusa la guerra, tuttavia, De Roberto, in alcune novelle, revoca in dubbio le precedenti certezze, mettendo in scena le tragiche vicende dei soldati che vi hanno partecipato in prima persona. Così, superando gli schematismi imposti dall’ideologia positivista, scopre le vite degli uomini reali che sono stati coinvolti negli eventi bellici.
