Abstract

Review of "Two Missionary Accounts of Southeast Asia in the Late Seventeenth Century: A Translation and Critical Edition of Guy Tachard’s “Relation de Voyage aux Indes” (1690–99) and Nicola Cima’s “Relatione Distinta delli Regni di Siam, China, Tunchino, e Cocincina” (1697–1706)", written by Stefan Halikowski Smith. In his book, Smith presents two unpublished missionary texts, two testimonies relating to areas of Southeast Asia that show how the economic and politic equilibria changed after the Siamese revolution of 1688, as well as how the French colonial policy conducted by Louis XIV evolved in the eighteenth century and the unsuccessful attempt by new actors, such as the Republic of Venice, to enter in Southeast Asian trade.
