By trying to apply on fiction an analysis perspective taken out by the fields of Pragmatics and of the conversation studies, this paper focuses on the classification of the speech acts used by the narrator and the characters in "Il Romanzo della Bambola" (1895-1896), by the children’s book writer Contessa Lara (1849-1896). First I have introduced the language and style of the author and, in particular, of this novel, and its plot, moral meaning and narrative typology, within the context of the educative and entertainment children’s literature of the 19th century. Then I used a taxonomy of the illocutionary acts which combines J. Austin’s indicative proposal and J. Searle’s remarks about it. The calculation and interpretation of the types of acts employed have allowed to highlight the strongly ideological, moralistic and emotional tone of the text and the importance given to the clear definition of the relationships among the characters of the story, aimed at educating and moving little and teenage girls.
